Utes Screwed

Published by richd under College, Football, Sports Edit This

Right now, if you are a Utah Utes fan, alumni, student, faculty, coach, or football player, you are feeling screwed right utah-utes.gifnow. That is about the consensus of everyone that I speak to as well. You, the football team of the Utah Utes, played your collective asses off this season and then marched into your bowl game an decisively beat the Alabama Crimson Tide. After the dust has settle, you now have a second place trophy to show. Second place is not more than the first loser.

For this very reason, this is why the BCS does not work. When the hell did we turn to a computer to tell us who is number 1. As for me, number 1 is determined on the field by the ONLY team that is left standing. This is why there is no conflict with the Super Bowl.

I feel for these guys that busted their can for their coaches, fans, alumni, boosters, sponsors, advertisers, family, and friends. For it is really them that have lost. Basically, for lack of betters words, the Utes were screwed by a computer.

College Quarterbacks Could Make NFL Draft Interesting

Published by richd under College, Football, NFL, Sports Edit This

My biggest complaint with the 2008 season has been the lack of quality quarterbacks. Well, the 2009 NFl Draft might just very well remedy that issue. With the likes of Sam Bradford, Matt Stafford, Josh Freeman, Nate Davis, Tim Tebow, nfldraft.jpgand Mark Sanchez all potentially joining an already rich corps of graduating quarterbacks, the quality issue for QBs in the NFL should improve. Personally, I think that Josh Freeman should stay another year, but all the others seem to be a good choice to jump. I have concerns with Tebow making the jump to the NFL only because he has only played in the spread and he will not be able to do in the NFL what he has done in the college ranks. The guys are much bigger, much faster, and look at you as fair game.

I do think that if Matt Stafford chooses to go, he will go very high in the draft right along with Sam Bradford. Matt Sanchez would be another in a long line of USC quarterbacks, but once again, he would be a concern to me in the transitional phase.

I can not wait for the draft as this year seems to have some great prospects that are actually READY to step on the field.

Status of Stafford and Moreno to Be Revealed

Published by richd under College, Football, NFL, Sports Edit This

The University of Georgia Bulldogs will hold a press conference on Wednesday at 3:30 PM EST time. The purpose of this mskm.jpgpress conference is to reveal the decisions made by quarterback Matt Stafford and running back Knowshon Moreno as to whether or not each will be entering the NFL Draft for 2009.. Personally, my opinion is that they are already gone.

The big question is if the two of them are ready to play football at the next level. The answer to that question really lies with the two individuals. However, I am going to put my 2 cents worth in the hat. As for Moreno, this guy has to be the closest thing to Herschel Walker that I have seen come through UGA in some time. He has explosive speed, can cut on a dime, and if need be, lower the shoulder. He also has a flair for the dramatic and a hustle that no one matches. In the case of Stafford, personally I think that he could use another year of college under his belt, but I believe he is as good as any of the other quarterbacks that are entering the draft, so why not.

I will be glued to the television today to hear their announcement.

Fulmer Stays In Knoxville

Published by richd under College, Football, Sports Edit This

fulmer2_si.jpgWhile it has been rumored around Knoxville that many prominent boosters would like to see former University of Tennessee Vols head coach Phillip Fulmer stay connected to the university in some capacity. Today it was announced that a deal was reached between Fulmer and the university that would accomplish this. Fulmer was formally offered and accepted a “special assistant to the president” [of the university] position. This position will not be related solely to any one department. What this means is that the popularity of the former head coach can be utilized where it will be most beneficial for the university as a whole. This is a three month deal worth $12,500 per month and is being privately funded. While this will certainly not be a permanent position, it will be mutually beneficial. It will allow the Fulmer to chart his future in whatever capacity best suits his career ambitions. It will also all the university to benefit from the large and loyal following he has developed. This appointment will end on February 28, 2009.

SEC and the Big 12

Published by richd under College, Football, Sports Edit This

With Florida’s win over Alabama today both of these SEC teams finish at 12-1. With Oklahoma’s win today they also finish at 12-1 while Texas finishes at 11-1. These are the top four teams in college football. All four have real Heisman Trophy contenders. All four have been college powerhouses for years with Florida winning the National Championship in 2006, Texas winning it in 2005, and Oklahoma winning in 2000; and LSU who had a less than stellar season this year brought the National Championship home to the SEC in 2003 and 2007. That means that since 2000, the National Championship has been one by three non-SEC and Big 12 schools. There is often so much talk about how good other conferences are, and to give them their props, they do have their moments. But seriously, the schools in the SEC and Big 12 have many schools within their conferences that could be contenders, who can step up and take down those powerhouses. The other conferences would be hardpressed to face Georgia between the hedges or grab a Tiger by the tail in Missouri. Though those of us who have been proponents of the strengths of these conferences and have espoused this for years, now hope it is apparent that these conferences are the strongest.

Quiet Weekend For College Football

Published by richd under College, Football, Sports Edit This

This week does not hold a ton of football on the college side. More specifically, in Division 1 NCAA. With that said, there are some games that actually will be quite interesting. In this post, we will take a look at a few of them. I am not much for making predictions on who will win or lose, but I think I know how to pick a good game. So, lets take a look at a few of them.

CBS has one that I typically hold a lot of interest on. This year the Midshipmen of Navy actually lead their conference with a 7-4 record. With that said, the 12 noon game with Navy versus Army game should be a good one to take in as they almost always play tough. After that one, you can stay tuned as the undefeated Crimson Tide takes on the Florida Gators. This one should really be a barn burner.

Once done with the blood bath that will be known as the SEC Championship game, then you can flip to ABC where you can catch the Missouri Tigers taking on the Oklahoma Sooners. I can not wait to see this one. And, if that is not enough football for you, ESPN2 host the Cincinnati versus Hawaii at 11:30. That should put you to sleep.

New Era Begins At The University of Tennessee

Published by richd under College, Football, Sports Edit This

Today, a new era begins inside the University of Tennessee Volunteers sports programs. To be more specific, a new era began today with the Tennessee Vols football program. Lane Kiffin was truly announced today as the new head coach of the program that has seen two losing seasons over the last 5 years. This year, they checked in at 5-7. However, they did win their last game to send Phillip Fulmer out in style.

Lane becomes the 21st head football coach in the history of UT. He brings with him charisma, youth, and a desire to recruit. The biggest issue is his lack of experience as a head coach, but hopefully that will not set him back. The good thing about him being in now is that he can meet with the team and coaches and lock in the ones that need to stick here.

All in All, let’s hope that this new selection will propel Tennessee back into being the powerhouse that it once was.

Mississippi State Head Coach Resigns

Published by richd under College, Football Edit This

croom.jpgMississippi State head football coach, Sylvester Croom resigns. Coach Croom came to Mississippi State in 2004. When he arrived the Mississippi State football program was in a shambles. Mississippi State was on NCAA probation for recruiting violations and had not had a winning season in three years. It did take Coach Croom three more years of diligent work to finally produce a winning season. Last year the Bulldogs finished the season with a 7 and 5 overall record. This made the Bullldogs bowl eligible for the first time in seven seasons. Accepting a bid to face the University of Central Florida in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl, the Bulldogs came away with the win. It has by no means been an easy road for Croom who leaves Mississippi State with an overall record of 21 and 38. Croom can be credited with revitalizing a failing athletic program while pushing his players to excel academically. This is not the first, nor will it be the last college head coach to be replaced as the 2008 season ends for many schools.

Phillip Fulmer Appreciation Day

Published by richd under College, Football, Sports Edit This

As Phillip Fulmer jogs out on the field at Neyland Stadium on Saturday, it will be one of the most emotional trots that he has ever had. Fulmer holds a lot of history for the University of Tennessee . The biggest might be that he is the 20th head coach to hold the reins on this once SEC powerhouse. In 1980, Fulmer started a run that would span 3 decades. He took an assistant coaches position under Johnny Majors who was the head coach at UT. Johnny took over in 1977 and ran the team phillip-fulmer.jpguntil the end of the 1992 season. Phillip Fulmer will hold onto the same amount of time with the exception that he has the 13 previous years with the Vols as an assistant.

It is said that when Phil bleeds, his blood is orange. On Saturday, when Phil cries, I believe that his tears will also be orange. The one thing that no one can take from this man, this myth, this legend, is his love for the University of Tennessee football program, it’s athletic department as a whole, it’s student body, it’s faculty, and the school as a whole. The day that the “agreement” was reach, Phillip Fulmer was an emotional wreck. However, win or lose, this Saturday will hold more emotion for the much loved, much appreciated football deity that we all have grown to know as Phillip Fulmer.

This weekend the players, the alumni, and the fans will stand many times to give a resounding ovation to the man that has led them through many battles on this field. This Saturday does not belong to the University of Tennessee, to the city of Knoxville, or to the state of Tennessee. No, this day belongs to Phillip Fulmer.

Which Poll Do You Believe?

Published by richd under College, Football, Sports Edit This

When I look at college football, I can see just how mixed up and messed up it’s system is. Ignoring anything concerning the BCS and any type of playoff system, let’s take a look at the polls.
